Assemblymember Marc Steinorth of the 40th Assembly District spoke on December 6th at the 1 Million Cups San Bernardino monthly event which is hosted by the San Bernardino Community College District and EDCT Foundation. Assemblymember Steinorth inspired the audience as he spoke about his entrepreneurial experiences including opening American Pizza on Baseline in San Bernardino and expanding that one store to 5. This initial experience enabled him to venture into other businesses.
After being introduced to the audience by Trustee Anne Viricel, Assemblymember Steinorth entertained the audience with his story of his father being stationed at Norton Air Force Base to his experiences growing up that led him to become an entrepreneurial-minded person. He spoke of the importance of knowing “who your customer is.” He started Atlas Buying Group, an advertising agency in 1998 with the idea of buying advertising for groups of small businesses to negotiate lower rates for them. By pooling their resources together they were able to compete with larger companies. Some of his past clients included El Pollo Loco, Farmer Boys, and American Tire Depot. He worked with many businesses that started out as one store and became large corporations later on. He believes entrepreneurship is essential to the Inland Empire.
“Finding success in starting and operating your own business is the definition of living the American Dream. 1 Million Cups is a great opportunity for individuals seeking help and guidance in starting their own businesses; by bringing a multitude of speakers – ranging from local business owners, political figures, and start-ups – the community is able to engage and help one another,” said Assemblymember Marc Steinorth.
After speaking, Assemblymember Steinorth took questions from the audience and then took time with the audience to take photos and selfies. Ashley E. Gaines, Director of the EDCT Foundation said, “the audience was so excited to have a local elected official here and available to them. We all really appreciate that he took the time to answer questions and address concerns from everyone. His stories from his experiences were not only entertaining but very informative.”
